The Farmers Association of Iceland (BÍ) is the umbrella
organization of all farmers in Iceland with its headquarters
in Reykjavík and has a staff of 47 persons, some of whom are
located outside Reykjavík. It is managed by a director
appointed by a board of seven farmers from all parts of the
country. These seven farmers are elected at the annual
Agricultural Assembly of 49 representatives elected in turn by
13 local agricultural associations and 12 specialized (sector)
associations for different farm enterprises.
The main objectives of the Association are to provide advisory
services at national level, including all the main farm
enterprises such as livestock and crop husbandry, as well as
on farm buildings and mechanization, economics, land
management and organic farming. This includes the collection
and processing of breeding records for all livestock species
and the gathering of information on livestock numbers as well
as recording of winter feed supplies and supervision of animal
welfare on individual farms. It plays a key role in
negotiating contracts with the Government such as on quota
systems and support schemes.
The Association publishes, in addition to its annual report,
two periodicals and information bulletins on several
agricultural matters.

A
curiosity: The Farmers Association of Iceland is certainly the
only EAAP member organization located in its own building
which is mainly used as a hotel! (Radisson SAS)
