André Leroy can be considered one of
the pillars of EAAP. He was in fact the one that as member of the
French delegation during the IV international congress on Animal
production held in Zurich in 1939 laid down the bases for the
creation of the International Association for Animal Production. The
same year the statutes of this new association were fully adopted by
the 15 founding countries. Unfortunately the 2nd world war put an
end to this new reality.
After the end of the hostilities the
different countries met again at an international congress held in
Zurich in October 1947. In 1948 a preparatory committee was held in
Italy and then in France. However, it was not until 1949 that the
Association during the V International Congress of Animal Production
held in
Paris
actually started with the signing of the remaining 12 founding
countries. The first president of this Association was of course
Prof. André Leroy.
The Founding members of EAAP are:
Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany. Iran, Italy, Morocco,
Spain, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Tunisia
FAO that had just established itself
in Rome, Italy gave EAAP its approval for all activities in Europe.
When FAO decided to create a European Committee for the Milk and
Butter Control (the future ICAR), Prof. Leroy became its first
president.
For 12 year Prof. Leroy promoted
scientific activities related to animal production, during his term
EAAP held seven study meetings, three international congresses and
many specialised meetings. When his second term as president elapsed
he was elected honorary President and continued to represent EAAP at
many international events and meetings.
Prof. Leroy was not only one of the
founding member of EAAP but he was also a pioneer in innovation and
modern methods of teaching. He created innumerable teams of young
researchers that today continue his legacy in the field of
nutrition, milk industry, technique of productions and agronomic
research.
Every year EAAP remembers Prof. Leroy
with an award that bears his name and is given to a candidate who
has made an outstanding scientific contribution to Animal production
over a sustained period.
