Dr. Kristof Kallay (1916–2006)
Born in the beginning of the last
Century, Kristof Kallay, the son of a Ministry of Agriculture in
Hungary, educated as a lawyer was familiar with the three official
languages of EAAP. He served diplomatically and efficiently EAAP as
one of the very first Secretary General for 26 years from 1951 to
1967, then from 1976 to 1986. He died in his beloved country early
in 2006.
Always distinguished and courteous,
he was specifically known for his full investment in people, in
diplomacy, never being a grey suited bureaucrat, but a manager at
the service of European Countries engaged in Animal Production and
Animal Science. He contributed to settle and to develop the
Association, its initial Statutes and EAAP Bylaw. He supported EAAP
first as a daughter of FAO, then turned into a full and living
Association completely recognised at world level. He contributed to
the creation of several Technical Committees of the Council of EAAP.
He has also developed and supported the World Association of Animal
Science as its Secretary General for several years.
He has successfully integrated
numerous countries of Europe in the EAAP: the United Kingdom,
Poland, Hungary, The Soviet Union. Under his authority, financial,
diplomatic, political and linguistic problems have almost vanished.
We shall keep in mind his memory, his prestigious standing as
ambassador of EAAP.
Prof.
Archimede Mordenti (1936-2006)
A void was created on the 11th March
when Professor Archimede Mordenti suddenly passed away, lost for
ever to his family and to the world of Science and Academy.
Graduated in Veterinary Medicine in 1959, followed all the stages of
an academic career at the University of Bologna, enriched by his
experience as a physiologist and a nutritionist at the Belgian
University of Leuven. He won a professorship at the University of
Milan, then Bologna, up to Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary
Medicine. Some of his responsibilities concerned the prestigious
Presidencies of the Parma Ham and San Daniele consortiums Commission
and of the Parmegiano Reggiano Consortium Research Committee.
The memory of a long and dedicated
career lives in more than 250 publications, teaching activities,
management of departments and committees, speaking at national and
international meetings.
His unequal support in the human
relationships and to the development of zootechnics will be
remembered by his family, his colleagues and followers.
Prof. Engineer Alexander Sommer
(1936–2006)
Doctor of Sciences, Senior Scientific
worker at The Research Institute of Animal Production, Nitra,
Slovakia and President of the Slovak Academy of Sciences suddenly
died on the 16th of November 2006. Incidentally, he was registered
as an active participant of the Annual meeting of 2006 in Antalya
receiving the Distinguish Service Award of the EAAP! Professor
Sommer has been buried in Bratislava. As a distinguished Scientist
in Nutrition, excellent colleague and friend he will be deeply
regretted by his family, his country and the European World of
Animal Science.
Prof. Antonio Mario Pilla (1926 –
2006)
Antonio Mario Pilla passed away in
December 2006 after one year of fears and hopes.
He has been one of the most eminent
Italian scientists in animal science, for over 50 years.
Genetics was his predominant
interest; in this field he gave fundamental contributions to the
genetic improvement of diverse animal species. His intuitions in the
theory of quantitative genetics, mainly published in his book
“Metodologia statistica e programmazione degli esperimenti” were
fundamental for the formation of the new generation of researchers
in Italy.
Graduated in Animal Science in 1951;
from 1959 to 1994 he was successively researcher, Director of the
Animal Genetics Section and General Director of the National
“Istituto Sperimentale per la Zootecnia”, then full professor of
animal breeding and genetics at the University of Molise.
During his intense and productive
career, Pilla attended for many years the EAAP meetings, had
continuous international co-operations and obtained numerous
scientific acknowledgments in Italy and abroad.
Born in the beautiful small village
of Ferrazzano, in the region of Molise, he lived, in the last decade
of his life in an ancient small castle. In this stimulating
atmosphere, he combined science and culture, publishing some
dialectal books and dramas, which he observed, with his attitude of
excellent researcher, traditions, passions and wisdom of the rural
society. His friends and students will miss Pilla’s teaching,
loyalty and peaceful irony; animal scientists will miss his
intuitions.
Prof.
Jean Louis Tisserand (1932-2007)
Born in Nancy in
1932, Professor Jean Louis Tisserand was educated in Animal Science
at Institut National Agronomique (1953-1956), then at Paris-Sorbonne
in Biology and Physiology (1956-1961). He was successively active as
Research Assistant in INRA (1955-1962) in Ruminant Nutrition, then
as Assistant Professor (1962-1965) and then Associate Professor
(1966) at INA Paris. He was appointed as Full Professor at Ecole
Nationale des Sciences Appliquées in Dijon since 1967 and, up to his
provisional retirement in 1998 as Professor Emeritus.
As a teacher in
Animal Science, he specialized in Ruminant Nutrition, in particular
on the use of rough forages by cattle, small ruminants, horses,
camels; writing 49 publications, 82 abstracts; he has also
supervised 24 thesis. In the extension sector, he directly advised
farmers in his Burgundy Region. He was simultaneously involved in
the board of the French Association for Animal Production (AFZ),
Grassland (AFPF) and Nutrition (AFN). He was also hired as Adviser
of the Ministry of Agriculture in charge of Higher Education in
Agricultural Studies (1968-1972).
At International
level, he was deeply involved in the Scientific Management of the
Teaching Programme of the CIHEAM in Zarragoza (1968-1998) where he
was engaged as visiting Professor, scientific Adviser and Research
coordinator. He was occasionally active with the FAO, participating
to several workshops. He attended every Annual Meeting of the EAAP
up to 2005. He successively served as Secretary, then President of
the Nutrition Commission (1984-1994), finally as Council Member
(1994-1998) and recently as President of several working groups:
Teaching, Alternative animal species, Mediterranean Group.
For his invaluable
and tireless activities, he has been honoured by the highest
distinctions in France as Officier de la Légion d’Honneur (2001) and
Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Mérite (1971). Jean Louis was
enthusiastic, friendly, tireless at the service of individual
student, farmer, people, in particular those involved in animal
science and animal production.
A religious
service was celebrated in his memory, also remembering the memory of
his beloved wife and son Jean François, in the St Michel church of
Dijon on June 12th 2007.
